Inquest dates announced for construction site and Detour Gold Mine deaths

TORONTO — Dates for inquests into the deaths of Jacob Gordon and Dennis Millette have been announced.

Dr. Joel Kirsh, regional supervising coroner for Central Region, Central East Office, announced a new date for the inquest into the death of Gordon.

Gordon, 24, died in hospital on Nov. 24, 2015 from injuries sustained while working at a construction site in Vaughan.

The inquest, which is expected to last four days and hear from four witnesses, will start at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the Forensic Services and Coroners Complex, Courtroom B, 25 Morton Shulman Ave. in Toronto.

Dr. Mary Beth Bourne will be the presiding officer and Roger Shallow will be inquest counsel.

Dr. Harry Voogjarv, regional supervising coroner for North Region, Sudbury Office, announced the date for the inquest into the death of Millette.

Millette, 52, died on June 3, 2015, while working at the Detour Gold Mine in the Cochrane District.

The inquest is expected to last seven days and hear from approximately 15 witnesses.

It will start at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Best Western Premier Northwood Hotel245-A Airport Rd. in Timmins. Dr. David Eden will be the presiding officer and David Kirk will be inquest counsel.

Inquests are mandatory under the Coroners Act. The purpose is to examine the circumstances surrounding the two deaths. Once all parties with standing have the opportunity to present their information and ask questions of the witnesses, the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths from occurring in similar circumstances.
