Organization aims to buy bulldozer and ripper for Mully Children’s Family charity

OAKVILLE, ONT.

International Union of Operating Engineers Local 793 will hold a fundraising dinner at its union banquet hall to raise funds for construction equipment to help a Kenyan orphanage.

The union plans to purchase a bulldozer and ripper for the Mully Children’s Family, which has five homes for orphaned and unwanted street children in the African country. All the proceeds from the April 5, 2008 dinner will go to this venture.

The work of this Kenyan organization touched Local 793 members.

“This is truly an amazing story and we are glad to be able to give this very important humanitarian organization a helping hand by raising money to purchase this new equipment,” said Mike Gallagher, Local 793 business manager.

“It’s really a remarkable story of hope. I feel very optimistic that we’ll be able to raise the money from the construction industry here in Ontario.”

The construction equipment will help the organization expand its agricultural capabilities, and build fish ponds, dams and water catchments at facilities in Ndalani and Yatta. Cost of buying the bulldozer and ripper is $135,000. Caterpillar has agreed to pack the equipment into a C-container and ship it to Kenya. Crossroads Inc. will pay the $7,000 for transport. A special committee has been formed to oversee the fundraising.

The committee includes construction industry leaders such as Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario president Ucal Powell, Labourers’ International Union of North America VP Joe Mancinelli, Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario business manager Pat Dillon, EllisDon president Geoff Smith and Local 793’s Gallagher.
