Aecon Group Inc. and partner Peter Kiewit Sons Co. have won a $1.7-billion design-build contract for the construction of the Lower Mattagami Hydroelectric Complex, about 70 kilometres northeast of Kapuskasing, Ont.
Under the agreement, Aecon holds a 20 per cent interest in the construction joint venture that will redevelop four generating stations on the Mattagami River for Ontario Power Generation.
Construction consists of rebuilding Smoky Falls generating station and adding new generating units at Harmon, Kipling, and Little Long generating stations.
In total, the project will add approximately 440 megawatts of hydroelectric capacity, or enough electricity to power between 330,000 and 440,000 homes.
Completion of this project is expected in 2015.
