ST. JOHN’S, N.L.
Approximately $744,000 will be invested in communities on Newfoundland’s Northern Peninsula to improve municipal infrastructure in the area, the provincial government recently announced.
“Vital infrastructure, such as water and waste water treatment, is an important and necessary investment in any community and our government is pleased to assist communities in funding these services,” said Kevin O’Brien, municipal affairs minister, in a release.
Funding, through the 2012 Municipal Capital Works Program, will be provided to the Town of Hawke’s Bay for upgrades to chlorination equipment and lift station, while the Town of Trout River will replace a lift station and upgrade its pump house piping.
The Town of Englee will receive funding to relocate an outfall on Dorset Drive, and the Town of Main Brook will receive funding for a chlorination system. Funding is cost-shared based on population, with each town providing 10 per cent of the project cost.
Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2012 budget included $130 million over two years for municipal capital works projects throughout the province.
