Daily Commercial News

Toronto-based Aecon Group Inc. recently announced it has been awarded an $85 million construction contract for Vale SA’s Atmospheric Emissions Reduction project at its nickel smelter in Sudbury, formerly known as Inco.

SUDBURY, Ont.

Toronto-based Aecon Group Inc. recently announced it has been awarded an $85 million construction contract for Vale SA’s Atmospheric Emissions Reduction project at its nickel smelter in Sudbury, formerly known as Inco.

“Aecon’s contract is the first phase of this project, and includes construction of reinforced concrete foundations, pipe rack foundation and site preparation work for the process plant,” Aecon stated in a press release.

“Work also includes detailed excavation and backfill for these structures.”

In November 2010, Vale, based in Brazil, said it planned to spend about $3.4 billion to upgrade its operations in Sudbury, which it inherited when it acquired Inco in 2006 for $19.4 billion. Vale has estimated the atmospheric emissions reductions project will cost $1.5 to $2 billion.
