The Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) recently named BC Hydro and Power Authority, Hydro Ottawa, and Ontario Power Generation Inc. as winners of the fifth annual Sustainable Electricity Awards, which recognizes companies with sustainable approaches toward challenges in the electricity sector.

“The winners of the 2014 Sustainable Electricity Awards have demonstrated that sustainability is an essential consideration in their decision-making and core to their operations, within the communities in which they operate,” said CEA Board of Directors’ Committee on Sustainability David Morrison.

The winning projects were evaluated by an independent public advisory panel chaired by former B.C. premier Mike Harcourt.

“This year’s award submissions were profound demonstrations of what utilities are doing to improve their sustainability practices,” said Harcourt. “We were particularly impressed by the level of engagement of employees, Aboriginal Peoples, and of entire communities.”

Hydro Ottawa Holding Inc. took home the Environmental Commitment Award for their Hydro Ottawa’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy and Results Achieved to Date.

Ontario Power Generation Inc. was recognized with the Social Responsibility Award for Building Successful Partnerships with First Nations and Métis Communities.

The Economic Excellence Award went to BC Hydro and Power Authority for Developing and Implementing Modular Diesel Generating Stations (MDGS) in Remote Communities.
