The Manitoba government is giving the green light to the construction of a new northern hydro dam.
Conservation Minister Gord Mackintosh says the NDP is granting the Keeyask generating station an environmental licence.
He says the licence is the strictest of its kind with 165 conditions attached.
Mackintosh says the conditions include protecting lake sturgeon, caribou, wetlands and establishing mercury monitoring programs.
The Manitoba Metis Federation has accused the government of running rough-shod over its rights in its haste to build the $6.5-billion project.
Manitoba Hydro and its First Nations partners want to start construction on the Nelson River by this summer to take advantage of lucrative export power sales to the U.S. Midwest.
