HALIFAX, N.S.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada Peter MacKay recently announced in Nova Scotia that the New Building Canada Plan is now fully open for business.

“We are pleased to see a long term commitment from the Government of Canada to infrastructure renewal and development,” said Duncan Williams, president of the Construction Association of Nova Scotia.

The New Building Canada Plan builds on the Government of Canada’s unprecedented investments in infrastructure with $70 billion over the next decade, including the $53 billion New Building Canada Plan.

Funding is now available for a wide range of projects of varying sizes and scope, such as highways and major roads, drinking water systems, wastewater treatment facilities, and local roads. Provinces and municipalities can submit their projects for funding and new projects will be approved over the course of the year, and for the decade to come.

The Gas Tax Fund, which flows predictably each year, comprises the largest portion of the New Building Canada Plan — and is set to increase by nearly $2 billion over the next decade, due to indexation.

In addition to more than $33 billion in dedicated funding, municipalities also stand to benefit from $4 billion available for projects of national significance, as well as $1.25 billion in additional funding that is available for public-private partnership projects.
